Research shows that early literacy exposure increases a child's educational performance and likelihood of moving on to higher education. Unfortunately, 61% of children from low-income households, which encompasses most of the families in Second Mile Development's preschool, have very few or zero books in their homes. This initiative will allow developmentally appropriate, theme-based books to be sent home with students along with reading tips for parents to increase early literacy exposure to prepare students for success in kindergarten.
UCP Huntsville's weekly Preschool Readiness Class is designed to introduce children with special needs to a classroom setting, increase endurance, provide enjoyable learning experiences, and increase socialization skills needed to successfully transition to a traditional kindergarten classroom setting.
Precious Promises is a DHR-certified early childhood education program with an infant class, two toddler classes, and two Alabama First Class Pre-K4 classes. Children of VoP families are provided with high-quality, affordable, full-day child care five days a week. Children are ready for kindergarten and caregivers have affordable, quality child care, giving them time to work, attend school, and gain necessary skills to help break the cycle of poverty.
Level Up Literacy identifies K-3rd grade students who are not reading at grade level using the easyCBM assessment tool and then provides them with weekly, individualized and group reading instruction. Trained tutors deliver 30-45 minute sessions 1-3 times weekly, focusing on leveled reading, sight word practice, and phonics/writing activities.
Therapy Partners strives to increase early elementary literacy, primarily in second graders, by pairing struggling readers with a therapy animal team for a semester. The specially trained dogs or cats are non-judgmental listeners who are proven to lower stress, boost confidence, and improve reading fluency in the readers.
The Schools Foundation supports schools in improving the reading proficiency of K-3rd grade students and ensuring that they can read at or above grade level by 3rd grade. TSF commits to providing Orton-Gillingham Training, which is high-quality instruction, that will prepare students to meet or exceed grade-level standards and become confident and skilled readers.
The STEMazing Minds project will provide hands-on ways to introduce the 4th and 5th grade students of Challenger Elementary to coding and design through robotics and Greenpower racing. This project would give students an opportunity to create meaningful design projects to be used throughout the school year and teach them to problem solve through fun hands-on building. The Challenger Elementary STEMazing Minds project would provide a strong stimulus for motivating ALL students to pursue addition STEM subjects, by facilitating students to actively acquire knowledge and skills in processing information in STEM.
KTECH's mission is to train, prepare, and connect tomorrow's workforce today. In sixteen weeks, students can earn certifications in Mechatronics, Robotics, Soldering, and Snap On that lead directly to careers at our area's top employers. KTECH accepts students of all backgrounds with a special emphasis on helping underserved populations find a pathway to success through hands-on curriculum and the Life Lab Academy that offers soft skills training in finance, nutrition, resume building, interviewing, as well as access to mental health and wellness services.
The Aum Pathways to College Success Project aims to enhance the college readiness of high-achieving, low-income female students in Huntsville by providing ACT preparation coupled with comprehensive mentorship. This program not only improves ACT scores but also equips students with essential skills like time management, college application strategies, and exposure to STEM careers, ensuring their success in both higher education and future careers.
College readiness is a crucial factor in determining the future success of students, particularly for those from underserved communities. The Huntsville Learning Center is committed to addressing barriers head-on through a comprehensive college readiness program. The revamped test prep offerings will better serve students and the broader community. This updated program is designed to equip college-bound youth with the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to excel in standardized tests, which are a critical component of college admissions.
The CAP & GOWN Project provides Operation 36 after school ACT and academic tutoring to students at all six Huntsville City Schools high schools. Motivated and informed by monthly college tours, Operation 36 encourages students to put in the work their dreams require, with hands-on support from highly qualified teachers. As a result of these efforts, students will be prepared and empowered to attend the best and most affordable college for them.
The Eighth Grade Math Fluency Program implements a novel approach to math education. This innovative method teaches students to read math as a language, focusing on the logic and reasoning behind mathematical concepts rather than merely memorizing formulas or recognizing patterns.
